A seaview from a bar on the beach at Campoamar
The beaches of Torrevieja are located between "Cabo Cervera" and "Punta de Salaret". All the beaches have soft white sand with very clear water. All beaches have lifeguards in high season. There are lots of great ones, and it’s largely down to personal taste, but we can recommend a few we’ve used and liked. There are nice beaches in the centre of Torrevieja, including one with a natural swimming pool, but it’s difficult to park nearby and they do tend to get busy.
Pebbly as you step in, but lovely calm clear water, great for swimming. Also has pedal boats etc. Popular with Spanish familes.
To the North of Torrevieja, follow the signs for Elche. Not commercialised, some sand dunes, with a shower. Small, but with a fantastic restaurant on the beach, that does a mean paella and sangria. Just before La Marina is El Pinet beach, with a café and a spider web-climbing frame – great for watching the kids play while you chill out.
Guardamar del Segura
Large flat sandy beach, several beach bars and Parasols / loungers for hire. Lots of restaurants in the town and a really lovely park with lovely mosaics telling the story of the town.
Very busy, but still fun. Like Guardamar plus hotels including La Zenia, which does a huge all you can eat buffet.
Just South of La Zenia, great beach and fantastic beach bar. Lots of steps down (and back up) so not for the feint-hearted and travel light!
Pillar de la Horredada
Very lively and lots of fun. Friday evening market with excellent fruit and veg.
La Lagunas de la Mata and Torrevieja encompass two salt lakes which have been hugely important in the production of salt, some salt still produced there now, dating back to the 13th century, making these the oldest (and they are also the largest) salt lakes in Europe. Between them, the two lakes virtually surround the town of Torrevieja and the area is now a Natural Park, due to large number of birds that nest or winter there - over 100 species in total. Bird species include Flamingoes, Black Necked Grebe, Avocet, plovers, hoopoes, and storks. The park information centre is located at Casa Forestal de La Mata, close to the N332 coastal road and there are marked routes for walking, and in some cases, cycling. Great link to video about the salt lakes here :
San Miguel de Salinas
Turn right onto the main road out of the estate, then turn left onto main road and follow signs. About 5 minutes away. It’s only a small town, so you’ll find things simply by having a good wander round.Great little supermarkets, fish shop and butchers. Other shops, including a couple of lovely antique, furniture and curtain shops. A beautiful Catholic Church.
Wednesday is market day in San Miguel – you’ll find anything and everything there.
Similar to San Miguel, and about the same distance. Turn left out of the estate, cross 2 roundabouts and you’re there. Lots of places to eat, and those we have tried are listed in the Property Book.
20 miles inland is an ideal shopping destination, as is Alicante itself. Newly opened shopping malls are excellent if you don’t fancy heading into the City centre. Ikea, Decathlon, Primark, Zara etc
A trip to Elche is an absolute must, especially for the palm gardens which are home to the largest Palm tree collection in the world, and is just one of those places you’ll love. It also has the biggest and most spectacular firework display each year in August, which you have to see and hear to believe! Do go if you’re there at that time of year.
The region’s capital has a beautiful monastery, now a private school, beautiful architecture, river and shops. Also Cathedral and museum. Not surprising, good places to eat too.
There are lots of championship standard golf courses close by, including La Finca (10 minutes away), Villamartin, Campomoar and Las Ramblas. But our very own Vistabella golf is a great option!
Terra-mitica theme park is near Benidorm (about an hour to the North), but there is a water park actually in Torrevieja, Aquapolis which the kids really enjoy. Also near Benidorm (which is not all like the TV show!) are Les Fuentes D'Algar waterfalls.
A pleasant ferry journey to this island is well worth the effort.
